Elon Musk said Monday that he plans to give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States next year, but offered no details about how the pledge would be carried out.
“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America,” Musk wrote on X. “This will be the first of many.” Census Bureau data cited by several outlets put the number of U.S. children at roughly 72 million to 73 million.
Musk did not explain who would qualify, how recipients would receive or hold the shares, or what restrictions might apply. The Indian Express, citing Business Insider, estimated the shares would be worth about $10.5 billion at the current price.
The announcement followed a separate pledge by SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell to donate $320 million in SpaceX stock for more than 2 million children, according to The Indian Express, citing Yahoo News.
Musk made his proposal while responding to news that artificial-intelligence company Anthropic had committed 5% of its shares to a fund supporting public-interest donations. Musk wrote that he recommended giving shares directly to the public and said that was what he intended to do.
